A name from the heart of the epic
The name Bārmān appears many times in Ferdowsi's Shahnameh (10th–11th century). These two couplets are quoted verbatim from the Ganjoor edition of the text.
یکی ترک بد نام او بارمان
همی خفته را گفت بیدار مان
There was a Turk, Bārmān by name — to the sleeping he said: stay awake.

The epic roots
Who was the Bārmān of the Shahnameh?
In the Shahnameh, Bārmān is a champion of the house of Viseh: son of Viseh and brother of Pirān, Turan's wise vizier. In the reign of king Nowzar he defeats the aged Qobād — brother of Qāren — in single combat, and later falls to Qāren's spear. In the tale of Rostam and Sohrab, Afrasiyab sends him and Hūmān with twelve thousand riders at Sohrab's side; Ferdowsi writes that Turan had no braver warrior-commanders than those two.
The Bārmān of the epic fights on the Turanian side, and we do not hide that; our choice is not homage to a character — it is homage to the name itself: an ancient word from the heart of the Persian epic, with a meaning that is still alive — worthiness, greatness of soul, and wakefulness.
